Just moments after Japan won the bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games, Zaha Hadid unveiled plans for an inventive and environmentally-conscious retrofit that will transform the country’s National Stadium into the new Tokyo National Olympic Stadium.

The central structure is radically different from its predecessor, looking more like a cool and calming space station than your average stadium – and it comes complete with eco-friendly elements such as greywater reuse. The studio has incorporated geothermal heat and a rainwater cooling system within the stadium concept, along with the commitment to recycle greywater.
