Carved into dozens of live oaks and hardwoods, the faces sculpted by Keith Jennings meant to represent the sailors who drowned on ships made from trees from St. Simons island. Jennings embarked on his Tree Spirits project back in 1982 as a way to kill time on a budget.

The artist was later commissioned to apply his wood sculpting skills on a series of trees throughout St. Simons Island, located right off the coast of the state of Georgia. The artist says that each face he carves into the wood is created entirely according to the tree. He insists he has not that much to do with it; he works with each tree’s soul; the trees do it all.
