Submarines became war weapons in 1915, when the British ocean liner Lusitania was taken down by a German U-boat. Prior to this, an incident like this hadn’t occurred, and it left many in shock as it killed almost everyone on board, around 1,200 people. The victims either died from drowning or hypothermia from the cold waters. Interestingly enough, a single torpedo took the vessel down.
