Why Some People Are Born With Tiny Holes Above Their Ears

SHEmazing!
SHEmazing!

Every year a different phenomenon seems to go viral for no reason, and 2016 is no different. This year, people all over the world have been sharing curious pictures of their (or their kids’) ears. If you’re confused as to why the internet hive mind is obsessing over such odd photographs, then read on.

If you didn’t already figure it out, these pictures had a somewhat unique component to them – a small hole above the ear canal. The first couple of shots to have hit the net were welcomed with a healthy dose of scepticism – where accusations of “photoshop” and “removed piercings” were thrown around.

However, as time went on, more and more people started sharing their own photos of these strange and seemingly new holes, adding to the credibility of the whole ordeal. A lot of these images were posted by concerned parents, asking the masses if there was something wrong with their new born. Others decided to chime in with pictures of their own ears, commenting that they’d thought they were the only one with such a “deformity.”

As the amount of evidence began to pile up, skeptics became converts and joined the flourishing discussion with the intent of helping solve the mystery. Though the speculation on where these holes came from and what they actually are remains rampant, there’s already a lot that we do know.

For starters, these ear holes are nothing new, and there is extensive documentation of the “phenomenon” dating back long before 2016. In this short article we will review some of the facts and hopefully provide you with a few possible answers as to why some people develop these tiny holes, and whether or not there is any reason for concern.

That being said, there is a lot of speculation and misinformation circulating on social media, so if your curiosity is still unsatisfied after you get through our list, make sure to do some more research on your own. With that out of the way, hit next and let’s get going!
