“Sultan the Pit Pony†is the largest figurative earth sculpture in the United Kingdom. Designed by Welsh artist Mick Petts and constructed using 60,000 tonnes of coal shale along with stone, and earth, it extends over 200 meters in Caerphilly, South Wales.
The earthwork is a homage to the pit pony, the last of which was retired in 1999. They were commonly used by the local mining industry for two centuries to haul tubs of coal.
“Sultan the Pit Pony†isn’t purely for aesthetics though, this sculptural earthwork also serves a purpose: it is adjacent to Parc Penallta and is intended to act as a windbreaker for the events arena.
