How does Mortal Combat Relate to Mortal Monday?

  • Mortal Kombat and Mortal Monday led to the creation of the Electronic Software Ratings Board (ESRB);
  • Mortal Monday led to the rise of gaming arcades.

Mortal Monday Launched the Game into the Market

Not many remember that mortal Monday was the launching theme, slogan and almost turned into a theme for the original Mortal Kombat video game back in 1993. The idea behind the name was to increase the number of individuals interested in viewing and purchasing the video first hand before its release on that day. It was the first game in the form of a console in which fans and potential players had to purchase, and it set the path for better and improved gaming consoles and other playsets.

The video advertisement was far ahead of their time in design, graphics, and appeal. It showed the excitement brought about by a new game and how many people were running to try and get a piece of the action. Compared to today’s advertisement quality, it may seem a little outdated, but going back in time may prove many directors, publishers, and even you as a viewer and reader wrong. The video did create a stir, it did sell the video game, and the revenue surpassed what was budgeted, and the profits rose sky-high.

Those who lived through the mortal Monday Sega Genesis say the hype was by far the ‘coolest’ for lack of better words. One of the old fans and a Mortal Kombat player says that “retailers were more eager to cash in on the sale of the video game that they kept offering buyers varying bonuses.” He even has a Mortal Kombat designed watch. He claims he got it as a bonus reward for preordering the video game. However, he indicates his disappointment in losing the “frenzy” as an anticipated video game release with the streamlined version in which products reach the consumer today!

Mortal Monday was Strategically Similar to the Game

The game would not have successfully sold had it not been for the strategic ways the advertising team took up the challenge. Releasing the advertisement trailer prior to the video game’s release to create suspense, curiosity, and a need to get one before your friends, family, or colleagues do was a strategic move. It created a demand for the product overnight. The customers were scrambling towards retailers’ shops to preorder the consoles before the actual launch. Retailers wanting to get a piece of the cake decided to make matters more interesting by offering bonuses and other rewards for a preorder.

The game producers say it took more than half a year (around six months) to design and complete the game. Those around at the time indicate that the four designers of the game had to name the game after it was ready, for they couldn’t agree on the game. The name cannot be a strategical move but can be dubbed a “lucky name plus charm” as it was accidental. However, the game itself evolved from a Van Damme production to a fantasy that captures the interests of many!

Mortal Kombat and Mortal Monday Led to the Creation of the Electronic Software Ratings Board (ESRB)

The initial Mortal Kombat produced in 1992 and released in 1993 was uncensored. People had to play through all that blood, increased fatalities, and gore. The most contradicting factor about that period is that SEGA released the uncensored version while Nintendo went with the more family-friendly with little violent version. However, the markets took more to the SEGA version going far and above the expected sales. Even Nintendo relented with the production of the second series on Mortal Kombat in the following year.

However, the violence did not go unnoticed with the series. In 1993, the senate set down a motion to discuss the amount of violence witnessed in video games. The concern was that it was not healthy for children and whether the government should intervene and protect the public from such violence. The term used then was “objectionable content.” The government didn’t intervene, but the industry had to self-regulate its content and thus the birth of the Electronic Software Ratings Board (ESRB) in 1994.

SEGA took up the challenge even after game developers termed the senate discussions “the Witch Hunt’. It developer an age rating system applicable to any video game sold via retailers. Thus, the modelling platform for the age ratings followed the SEGA rating system and was far easier to apply.

Mortal Monday Led to the Rise of Gaming Arcades

Mortal Kombat set the pace for arcade games. The release of Mortal Kombat on Mortal Monday was a critical turning point for all arcade games. The executive’s ambition to create a mature and sustainable market for adult-themed video games worked. Thanks to Mortal Monday and the video game, people can today enjoy playing varying titles such as The Last of Us, the Resident Evil, and Call of Duty. That train took off on Mortal Monday, September the 13th, in 1993, and there is no sign of it stopping.

The only diminishing factor in the path mortal Monday created is the demise of Western Arcades. The launch of the first Mortal Kombat included an arcade game. “Even with its demise, there are still consoles in people’s homes,” says one of the game fans. “Plus, the game versions are still coming up in varying designs and mimicking the current technological advancement,” adds another. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the demise of the gaming arcades.

Also, if you desire to play the old or new versions of the video game, all you need is to find Mortal Kombat on the Internet. You can play any of the recent versions of your choice. However, if you want the original versions, you may need to purchase one. You should be ready and “Prepare Yourself!” the uncensored videos are more violent than any you have ever come across. The game was transformative in the industry; it also required the players to have nerves of steel!

Summary

Discussing Mortal Kombat brings back a lot of memories for video game lovers. However, there would not be mortal Kombat without mortal Monday. The hype the advert created and the following demand was stepping stones towards making the game a success. However, the storyline and production for the games also surpassed the period. As such, it became a must-have for many fans and players. Its success saw the other release “Fatal Friday back in 1994 and Mortal Friday in 1995”. What is there to say other than Days of the Week can have a huge impact!
