When you think of a home, you picture something cozy and comfortable, right? These houses were built for people who love a good adrenaline rush and aren’t afraid of heights, water, or their house potentially collapsing at any moment. Here are the most dangerous houses in the world.

Private Island

This house was built in the 1950’s in the middle of the St. Lawrence River. It is located on the smallest inhabited island in the world known as Just Enough Room Island. We sure do hope they have some good flood insurance, though.

The Hanging Monastery

This monastery in was built 1,400 off the side of Mount Heng. It’s hard to believe that this structure is still standing after so many years in such a dangerous location.

Burning Down the House

Mount Merapi, or Fire Mountain, poses a danger to 75,000 people who live at the base of it. This volcano can spew at any moment and destroy the homes beneath it.

Maldives Bungalows

Due to global warming and the melting of ice causing sea levels to rise, the Maldives are in trouble. Some of the islands may disappear completely underwater. That includes those luxurious bungalows they’ve built in the middle of the water.

Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu has the potential to explode at any moment thanks to an active volcano nearby. Over two million people are in danger of losing their homes and lives. While the signs of an eruption may not show themselves completely, people know the risk of living in the location.

Meteora Monasteries

Don’t expect to be leaving the house everyday if you live in this 14th century monastery. When it was built, the only way people could get to the house was by a rope ladder or a hanging basket.

Wooden House

This house was made completely of wood in Archangel, Russia. At first, it was only 3 floors, but slowly increased to 13. Nobody can live in this house now because it’s considered a fire hazard.

Castle on a Cliff

This castle is built on the side of a cliff and requires guests to walk across a dangerous bridge to get inside. It is now a popular venue for weddings though.

Tree House

This house is truly pulling off an impressive balancing act. Nobody actually lives in this house though. It’s actually a tea house that you have to climb up two ladders to get into.

Top of a Rock

This little house is perched right on top of a little rock in the middle of a lake. It was built in 1969 and still stands to this day. It served as a vacation home in the summer for a wealthy family.

Spanish Town on a Hill

This little cluster of buildings is actually a town in Spain. There is one narrow street that runs through the town and there are two rivers on each side of it. It’s about a thousand years old and people still live there.

Situated in Hollywood Hills above the ground, this futuristic home belonged to an aerospace engineer. It was built in the 1960’s when thinking about what the future might be like was extremely popular. Take the The Jetsons for example.

Katskhi Pillar

Located in the country of Georgia, this monastery has sat on a large rock formation for over 1,500 years. Now, Maxime Qavtaradze lives in the house and must climb down 130 feet if he wants to leave his home.

Hanging House

These hanging houses are located in Cuenca, Spain. They look like they were built into the rocks of this steep cliff. They’re a popular tourist destination and have been converted into a museum and restaurant.

Mountain Home

This house is so isolated that it is two and a half miles up a secluded mountain. While nobody lives in the house full time, it is there for mountain climbers to stop in when they need to rest or are experiencing an emergency.

Leaning Buildings of Santos

It’s the modern Leaning Tower of Pisa. These high rises are located in Santos, Brazil and lean just slightly due to the foundations not being sturdy enough on ground made from soft clay.

Korowai Treehouse

Would you be able to sleep in this tree house located in Indonesia? This house in particular sits 100 feet above the ground. It’s common for the Korowai people to live in elevated homes, but they usually sit about 30 feet above the ground.

WoZoCo Apartments

Gravity doesn’t stand a chance when it comes to these apartments in Amsterdam. This creative building has apartments jutting out and hanging off of the side of the building. The architects were extremely clever when it came to designing it.

Phoenix House

If you don’t want to commit to living in one of these dangerous houses, you can rent this one on AirBnB for a few nights. It’s located in the danger zone of Kilauea volcano. This volcano is considered one of the most active volcanoes on the planet.

Dumpster Apartment

Tiny homes are all the rage right now as people are getting rid of their belongings and living a more sustainable lifestyle. This apartment in particular was made out of an unused dumpster. It’s even equipped with a rooftop deck and a BBQ.

Completely Isolated

On an island off the coast of Iceland is a house that is considered the most isolated house in the world. It’s believed that this house was built by puffin hunters in the early 1900’s so they could rest while hunting.

Most Dangerous Hiking Trail

This little pavilion is located on Mount Hua in China. It is known as one of the most dangerous hikes in the world. However, the view is absolutely incredible and completely worth the climb if you’re up to it.

Another building located on Mount Hua is a teahouse that you can reach by cable car. You can enjoy a traditional tea ceremony while admiring the views from being so high up.

Desert House

One of the hottest places that people live is in the Ethiopian desert. It can reach 115 degrees Fahrenheit daily. The only people who live here work to mine salt in the area. Otherwise nobody would ever want to step foot in this area.

Falling Water

The famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed Falling Water in Pennsylvania. While it was being built, they ran into a little problem; it was about to fall into the river. It is currently conserved and was restored for $11 million.

Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Monks seem to love living in isolation. This monastery in Asia is known as the Tiger’s Nest and is situated on the side of a mountain. It is a two-hour hike to reach the monastery and it definitely isn’t an easy hike.
