19. In The Shelter
Gumby was offered hospitality in the no-kill shelter Charleston Humane Societ in the fall of 2014. The rescuers estimated that he either three or four years old. They immediately putted him for adoption despite his bad condition hoping that someone will offer him a forever home. But where did the rescuers find Gumby?
18.Rescued From The Streets
Gumby was a stray, wandering the streets when Charleston Humane Society discovered him and decided to pick him up. They found him in an awful condition, sick and starving but they managed to help him recover and reclaim his well-being!
17. Recovering
As no one seemed to want Gumby, Gumby was offered plenty of time to recover, both mentally and physically. He started to become friendly again and display his will to live and play whenever he got the chance. He was full of energy and the rescuer were becoming more and more confident.
16. Adopted!
As the rescuers expected, soon after Gumby started to look healthy and playful, someone came for him! Gumby left the shelter with hopes of finding his forever home. But things would turn out differently…
15. He Came Back
Only three days after Gumby left the shelter, a staff member noticed something strange in the main entrance of the shelter… It was Gumby! It appeared that he somehow run away and returned to the shelter. But why?
14. Adopted Again
The staff members didn’t pay much attention to this incident and they thought that Gumby simply rejected his new owner. They decided to put him up for adoption once again. Little did they know that this incident would be repeated again and again…
13. Again And Again
After a couple of days Gumby was back again… It was made perfectly clear that something was up. Gumby kept escaping from his new homes and he always ended up back in the shelter.
12. 11 Times
This didn’t happen only for a couple of times… it happened for almost a dozen! The staff was getting anxious and confused with Gumby always returning to the shelter. But how did Gumby take it?
11. He Wasn’t Upset
The staff were extremely confused and surprised to see that Gumby always returned to the shelter happy, full of energy and clean. It wasn’t that he wasn’t getting the care he expected in his attempted homes… It seemed like Gumby wanted to be in the shelte! Something was up.
10. An Animal Behaviorist
The staff eventually decided to employ an animal behaviorist, Kay Hyman who had an extensive experience working with animals with strange, inappropriate and unexplained behaviors… After monitoring Gumby’s behavior she confessed that she’d never met a dog like him… It was a very rare and special case!
9. She Had Theory
After some careful examination and monitorign Kay seemed to have a theory about Gumby… And it is heartwarming! To quote her : “He knows he has work to do.”. But what kind of work?
8. An Empathetic Puppy
As it turned out Kay was right! Gumby is an extremely empathetic dog and he thought that being there to comfort all the scared animals of the shelter was his duty! As the staff recalled, it was obvious that Gumby returned to help the other animals relax and recover…
7. He Helped A Lot
Undoubtedly, Gumby helped quite a few animals recover and find meaning. They couldn’t understand while they were in a shelter and Gumby was there to comfort them and keep them company.
6. Something Amazing!
While Gumby’s kind actions are extraordinarily special, it was also something else that made the staff believe that they would never encounter a dog like Gumby again… He had a rare and unique blood type!
5. Compatible With Cats
His unique blood type was compatible with both cats and dogs! Even the vets were amazed! Gumby donated a lot of blood which the vets of the shelter used to save a lot of kittens with eye infections and other minor injuries.
4. Kept Searching
Being amazed by Gumby, the staff member felt that they had to return him the favor. They’d never abandoned the search for his new, and hopefully forever home! It was this time when they realized that Gumby was developing a special bond with one of the staff members!
3. Adopted Again!
It was true! Gumby chosed his new owner John Martin, a staff member at the shelter. John and his fiancée Joanna took Gumby home with hopes that he would stay with them forever!
2. He Stayed!
Gumby never tried to run away from his new family and it is more astonishing that he barely left John’s side! He was feeling happy and full!
1. Keeping People Updated
In 2017 John and Joanna moved to New York City and Gumby had to adapt into the life in a big city! John and Joanna decided to keep everyone updated with how Gumby was doing through their Facebook profiles and occasionally through the shelter’s page!
