20 Stars Who Are Leaving The U.S. Now That Donald Trump Is President

Reddit

Most people would agree that 2016 was a very eventful and for some, emotional year. Let’s rewind and take a quick look at some of the horrible things that happened over the last 11 months. For starters, music legends Prince and David Bowie passed away — leaving this world a little more bleak. Then Brexit happened, and things kind of just went down hill from there.

In 2016 we’ve witnessed a Zika outbreak, record breaking temperatures, police shootings, terror attacks, and plenty of other horrendous happenings. It really has been an odd year – the Golden State Warriors blew a 3-1 lead, Vine was shut down, and Harambe was shot.

As if all of that wasn’t enough for the American people, Donald Trump’s presidential win put the final nail in the metaphorical coffin of 2016. Social media went crazy, and people all over the country shared their views on the new president-elect. Though most people were disappointed with the result of the election, some were more than just a little upset.

A handful of celebrities took to Twitter in order to make their disapproval public — via a narrative that was all too familiar. In months leading up to the election, many big players in showbiz made it very clear that they weren’t huge fans of Trump. Some simply endorsed Hillary Clinton, while others swore left and right that they would move to Canada should Trump be elected.

Though most news outlets gave Trump a mere 5% chance at winning the election, the businessman-turned-politician managed to pull ahead and clinch the presidency. He’s set to be sworn in January, and barring any catastrophic collapses of American politics, Trump will take office some time next month.

Now that we’ve established that Donald J. Trump will be the 45th President of the United States, let’s return to the countless celebrities that are supposedly “leaving the country.” as a result. Judging by the sheer amount of entertainers that have claimed to be moving in light of Trump’s unlikely victory, it’s safe to assume that –  “I’m moving to Canada,” was just a cool thing to say and that no one will actually start packing their bags.

Although it’s likely that none of these superstars will actually follow through with their dramatic promise, it’s interesting to see which entertainers said that they would, and how many of them (if any) will actually hop the border. So, without further adieu, let’s take a look at 20 celebrities that promised to do just that.

20. Amy Schumer

Hollywood News Source

Comedian and actress Amy Schumer has been very vocal in criticizing the president-elect. She’s written about her thoughts on nearly every social media platform, and even went on a five minute rant at one of her concerts. In BBC interview, she’s also said:

“I will need to learn to speak Spanish because I will move to Spain or somewhere… It’s beyond my comprehension if Trump won. It’s too crazy,”

19. Bryan Cranston

Huffington Post

This Breaking Bad superstar said that the possibility of Trump becoming president is slim, but that he “hopes to God that it doesn’t happen. If it does, however, Cranston said that he would go north – to Canada, and it “wouldn’t be a vacation.”

18. Chelsea Handler

Similar to Amy Schumer, this funny lady also said that she would be moving to Spain should Trump get elected. To quote:

“I did buy a house in another country just in case, so all of these people that threaten to leave the country and then don’t, I will leave the country.”

17. George Lopez

HBO.com

Comedian George Lopez also promised to move to a spanish country – Mexico, specifically. “If he wins, he won’t have to worry about immigration, we’ll all go back,” Lopez told the TMZ more than 6 months ago. Interestingly enough, we haven’t heard from Lopez on this matter since the result of the election was made public.

16. Barbra Streisand

It’s not just actors and comics that threatened to move. Singer Barbra Streisand previously said that she would take refuge in the land Down Under, should Trump get in office:

“He has no facts. I don’t know, I can’t believe it. I’m either coming to your country [Australia], if you’ll let me in, or Canada,” she said in an interview this summer.

15. Cher

When it comes to dramatic, Cher certainly fits the bill. While most of her Clinton supporting peers have threatened to move out of the country, Cher says she’ll opt for a new planet altogether. She tweeted that, “IF HE WERE TO BE ELECTED, IM MOVING TO JUPITER >:|” more than a year before the election. With that said, it’s probably safe to assume that Cher had more than enough time to prepare for her interstellar move, so let’s give it some time and see how it pans out.

14. Natasha Lyonne

The “Orange is the New Black” actress wasn’t convinced that Trump had a chance at clinching the presidency, so her response was rather drastic. In a Starz interview, Lyonne said that she would move “to a mental hospital for a while,” just to give herself some time to process the results. Well, Natasha, hopefully that padded cell isn’t too uncomfortable.

13. Jon Stewart

Quartz

Like Cher, Jon Stewart – political satirist and comedian, wasn’t too keen on having Trump spend four years in the White House. In September of 2015, he reportedly told a journalist that he would “consider getting in a rocket and going to another planet, because clearly Earth has gone bonkers.” Hopefully he has some connections at SpaceX or NASA, otherwise this plan will be a tad too difficult to execute.

12. Amber Rose

Bustle

Amber Rose is no stranger to speaking out against the president-elect. In the past she’s commented on the several sexual harassment allegations that surfaced over the course of the presidential campaign, making her opinion very clear.  So it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the former Dancing With the Stars contestant said that she’ll be joining the long list of celebs headed for the border. Though she didn’t give an exact location, she said “I can’t even think about it! I’m moving, I’m out! I can’t. And I am taking my son with me!”

11. Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel Jackson made his opinion very clear during his appearance on The View. While discussing the election, Jackson argued that Trump was only running for popularity, and never actually had the intention of taking office. Jackson was so confident, in fact, that he promised to move to South Africa should Trump get elected.

10. Whoopi Goldberg

Huffington Post

Whoopi Goldberg is certainly not a Donald Trump supporter, and over the course of the presidential campaign she made countless comments about his character. At one point, while on The View, Goldberg spoke about leaving the country should he be elected. Interestingly enough, she one of only a couple celebrities that made a comment since. Despite the results going in Trump’s favour, Goldberg says that she’ll be staying in the US after all.

9. Raven-Symoné

Former “That’s So Raven” star said that she would not only hop the northern border, but that she would be taking her entire family with her as well. To quote:

“My confession for this election is if any Republican gets nominated, I’m gonna move to Canada with my entire family. Is that bad?” she told her “View” co-hosts earlier this year. “I already have my ticket … No, I literally bought my ticket, I swear.”

8. Lena Dunham

The “Girls” creator also said that she’ll be moving to Canada if Trump takes office: “I know a lovely place in Vancouver, and I can get my work done from there,” Dunham said this April. She later doubled down by adding: “I know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will.” Though it’s unlikely that Dunham will follow through, it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

7. Neve Campbell

The “House of Cards” superstar said that she would take refuge in Canada. The actress is a native Canadian, and she promised to move back to Ontario in the event of Trump winning the election. I’m terrified,” she told Huffington Post. “It’s really scary. My biggest fear is that Trump will triumph.”

6. Snoop Dogg

The D-O-double-G jokingly posted a photo of the CN Tower on his Instagram. The caption was a plea to Canada’s Drake, asking for a “property hook up in the 6ix.” Though the Instagram post was likely a joke, Snoop made it quite clear that he isn’t a fan of Trump. He’s also on of just a few rappers to publicly share his opinion on the president-elect.

5. Ne-Yo

Like Snoop Dogg, singer Ne-Yo also has his sights set on Toronto. During an interview with TMZ just a month before the controversial election, Ne-Yo said that “[he] and Drake will be neighbours if Donald Trump becomes president.” Luckily Drake has enough spare bedrooms to harbour all of Trump’s refugees.

4. Rev. Al Sharpton

The Root

Reverend Al Sharpton is civil right activist and radio talk show host. Due to the nature of his work, as well as some fundamental moral differences between Trump and himself, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Sharpton isn’t a big fan of Trump. He promised to book his ticket out of the country should Trump receive the Republican nomination.

“If Donald Trump is the nominee … I’m also reserving my ticket to get out of here if he wins. Only because he’d probably have me deported anyhow.”

3. Stephen King

One would assume that Stephen King, master of the horror genre, is immune to fear. But when it comes to this year’s election, that doesn’t appear to be the case. After authoring more than 50 gory novels, King is still terrified to live in Trump’s America, and has admitted that he’s considered the possibility of moving to Canada.

“A Tump presidency scares me more than anything else,” King told the editor of Washington Post, “I’m terrified that he’ll become president.

2. Keegan-Michael Key

Ironically, Canada is looking quite hot for many celebrities dissatisfied with Trump’s victory. Actor and writer Keegan-Micheal Key said that he too, would flee north should Trump secure the unlikely victory:

“It’s like, 10 minutes from Detroit,” the comedian told TMZ in January. “That’s where I’m from; my mom lives there. It’d make her happy too.”

1. Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Makers

Though she’s not quite a “celebrity” in the traditional sense, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg made a comment about moving to New Zealand if Trump were to take office. It’s extremely unusual for a Supreme Court justice to make a public stand regarding the presidential candidates, so Ginsburg’s comment shows just how strongly she feels about the president-elect.
